Director James Gunn Emphasizes Importance of Giving VFX Artists "Time to Do Their Jobs"

James Gunn Champions VFX Artists in New DC Productions, Prioritizes Quality Over Speed

James Gunn, director and CEO of DC Studios, is once again setting himself apart in Hollywood with his approach to visual effects. Known for blockbuster hits like Guardians of the Galaxy and The Suicide Squad, Gunn recently took to Instagram’s Threads to share his philosophy on handling VFX production—prioritizing respect for the artists and ensuring they have the time to deliver their best work.

In his post, Gunn emphasized the importance of giving VFX teams the freedom they need, stating,
"If you do some research, you’ll see my films have always taken a different approach. I’ve always given my VFX artist-collaborators the time to do their jobs properly and the respect they deserve. The quality of the VFX in my films is consistently high because of that, and because my friends at Weta, Framestore, ILM, and more are incredibly talented."

Gunn also discussed how this philosophy is shaping DC Studios projects, specifically Superman: Legacy. The film wrapped filming a full year ahead of its scheduled release on July 11, 2025, giving VFX teams ample time to perfect their work. “They’ve been hard at work on many shots for months before that,” Gunn explained, adding that careful planning and on-set editing play a crucial role in maintaining a polished final product.

Beyond Superman: Legacy, Gunn revealed that his respectful approach to VFX work is also being applied to Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, even though he’s not directing the project. In both cases, Gunn stressed that by allowing visual effects teams more time and resources, he’s ensuring audiences get the highest-quality visual experience possible.

The VFX Process: Respect and Time Equals Quality

This transparent approach comes as a breath of fresh air in an industry where VFX teams often face grueling deadlines. Gunn’s insistence on preparing meticulously and only shooting from finished screenplays allows for efficient post-production. He highlighted that this approach isn’t new for him, as his past films have benefited from working with renowned VFX houses like Weta Digital and Framestore.

His next project, Superman: Legacy, stars David Corenswet (Pearl, Twisters) as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, and Nathan Fillion as Guy Gardner. Inspired by classic comics like Jeph Loeb’s Superman for All Seasons and Grant Morrison’s All Star Superman, the film promises to be an emotional and visual spectacle, co-written by Gunn alongside Superman’s original creators Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

Shaping the Future of the DC Universe

James Gunn’s leadership as co-chairman and CEO of DC Studios, alongside producer Peter Safran, has already started to reshape the future of the DC Universe. Since their appointment in 2022, the pair have overseen a soft reboot of the franchise, emphasizing a cohesive and character-driven vision. Gunn’s personal involvement as both co-producer and executive producer on all major DC Universe projects, including Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow directed by Craig Gillespie, highlights his hands-on approach in guiding this new chapter.

In Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, rising star Milly Alcock (House of the Dragon) will portray Kara Zor-El. Although Gunn is not directing, his influence over the production ensures that the same care and attention to VFX quality will be maintained across the board.

By giving VFX artists the time and respect they deserve, James Gunn is setting a high bar for future DC Studios productions. His clear focus on quality over speed not only promises stunning visuals but also sets an example for how Hollywood can collaborate more effectively with the skilled artists behind the scenes.

Mark your calendars for the release of Superman: Legacy on July 11, 2025!
