‘Moana 2’ Filmmakers Reveal First 30 Minutes of the Film Before Release

Exciting news for fans of Disney's beloved film "Moana"! During a recent press event at Walt Disney Animation Studios in California, the filmmakers of "Moana 2" gave a sneak peek by unveiling the first 30 minutes of the highly anticipated sequel. Set three years after the original, "Moana 2" promises to take audiences back to the magical world of Motunui, featuring the return of fan-favorite characters, Moana and Maui.

Director David Derrick Jr. shared some intriguing insights about the film’s development, revealing that "Moana 2" was initially envisioned as a web series. “The main core characters and themes were set up for that series format,” he explained. However, the team soon realized they needed to adapt the story for a feature film. “We had to rightsize it dramatically to fit a feature format,” he noted, emphasizing that while some elements didn’t transition perfectly, the essence of Moana's personal growth remains central to the story.

Co-writer Jared Bush, who is now Disney Animation’s chief creative officer, echoed Derrick’s enthusiasm, highlighting the unique opportunity to tell a grander story. “It’s an unbelievable opportunity to tell this story on a very epic scale, which is exactly what you want in the world of "Moana",” he said. “Knowing this version will be shown on the biggest screens in the world really allowed us to go all in on that epic quality.”

Co-director Dana Ledoux Miller added depth to the character of Moana, explaining the importance of her growth as a leader. “We thought a lot about what it means to grow as a leader. As you mature, you learn that your actions have consequences,” she explained. “We wanted to put Moana through her paces as a leader and explore who she becomes when she has others depending on her.”
